Rock classes for 4th graders

WOW - what fun! We've started offering a 20 minute class plus scavenger hunt for 4th grade students who are visiting the San Juan Bautista mission. The kids are so much fun and the teachers are loving this opportunity to combine a science class with their visit to the mission and state park for history!

So what do we do? It's 15 minutes of introduction to igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks - you know, the stuff on the 4th grade science curriculum. Then we allow 5 minutes for questions. Next the kids are given a scavenger hunt of 10 questions that they have to find the answers to. The answers are scattered throughout the store on signs. The questions are similar to: This metamorphic rock is green and is the California State Rock or this metamorphic rock comes in red, green, orange and purple and is the Birthstone for January. This provides the students a chance to actually touch and see the stones. It also provides some insights into the fact that igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary stones like Coal or garnet have practical uses.

Our last group of classes were from Seaside, CA. We got great reviews from the teachers. If you're interested in having your next 4th grade field trip to San Juan Bautista really "ROCK" - give us a call.
